Book Club
The Book Group meets the second Tuesday of each month in the church library at 9:30 am. The February 14th selection will be “The Story of Beautiful Girl” by Rahel Simon. Please plan to join in the discussion!
Call Dottie Bozart (741-4080) with any questions.
People with an interest in reading gather each month to discuss the book of the month. The discussion usually centers around how the characters relate to us and how we identify with them. The Book Club group endeavors to read a variety of types of books: fiction, biography, and classics comprise the majority of our selections. The reading list is formed by suggestions from its members.
The Book Club group has taken on the project of reorganizing the church library and works on this after each session. They want to share their love of books for other members of the congregation.
Selections we have read and discussed include:
The Red Tent by Anita Diamant
The Red Tent is historical fiction, based on the story of Dinah in Genesis, Chapter 34. In Genesis , Dinah does not say a single word. Her story is recounted by her brothers. In The Red Tent Dinah finds her voice and retells the story from her perspective and the women around her. This was a Booksense Book of the Year in 2001.
To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
Set in the southern town of Maycomb, Alabama, during the Depression, the book follows three years in the life of 8-year old Scout Finch, her brother, Jem, and their father, Atticus. The story of the arrest and eventual trial of a young black man are told through the eyes of a child.
The Rapture of Canaan by Sheri Reynolds
At the Church of Fire and Brimstone and Gods Almighty Baptizing Wind, Grandpa Herman makes the rules for everyone, and everyone obeys, or else. Try as she might, Ninah hasn’t succeeded in resisting temptation. She fears the wrath of Grandpa Herman, the congregation, and God Himself. But the events that follow show Ninah that Gods ways are more mysterious than even Grandpa Herman understands.
